sea kayaking

Tuesday the 24 march 2009 and today I went sea kayaking and it was really cool. The main difference with a normal kayak and a sea kayak is that a sea kayak has a rudder that you control with the foot pedals. Today after we had met at the classroom my wardli went to the shed and got our spray jackets and then we got on the bus and drive down to the boat ramp. After we had gotten our PFD's and our spray decks we got our paddles and got the kayaks into the water and then got into them. We paddled around a path that was set by the instructor (Phil) and then we went out onto the sea. It was really cool going over the waves and using the rudder because the rudder made steering the kayak so much easier. The wind was against us but that didn't matter, after we had paddled out a bit we turned around and came back and this time the wind and waves were on our side. After we got back we did some games like standing up in our kayaks and sitting on the backs and doing wheelies. Once we had finished we went back to the boat ramp and then we loaded up the kayaks onto the trailer and then we went back to camp.

On the second part of the sea kayaking trip we went back to the boat ramp and got in the same boats as last time but the only difference was that instead of Luke coming Mr Baird was coming with us. After we had all gotten onto the water we paddled around and had some fun. The water was really calm and peaceful and it was really clear. Some people had brought some hand reels and went fishing but they didn't catch anything. After we had paddled a bit we turned around and went into Magazine Bay and played some games. Phil the instructor taught us how to save ourselves if we were tipping over. And if we wanted to we could hold onto the front of his kayak and he would do an Eskimo roll and you would have to hold on. I did it and it was really cool. After we got back we had to load up the kayaks again because we were the last group again. Once we got back to camp we had to unload the kayaks and put them into the shed because they wouldn't be used for a while and we couldn't leave them out.

  1. Wow! How lucky are you! I wonder if there is anywhere in Adelaide you could do that. Were you surfing the waves back to the shore?
