daily journal

Monday 16 march 2009

this is my first journal entry and I am not so sure what I should write about. This morning we all played a game of soccer at 7:00 am and it was really cool. today I was leader and that means that I have a responsibility to make sure that things are okay and that every thing is organised. after soccer all the wardlis had breakfast and my breakfast consisted of a bowl of cornflakes. after breakfast we all met in the classroom and discussed what was going to happen today. Today the plan was that wardlis 2 and 3 were going snorkeling before lunch at Hardwicke bay, and wardlis 4 and 5 helped out with pulling out weeds and the local community centre which was also near Hardwicke bay. After lunch the two groups swapped. I'm in wardli 5 which meant that I was going to help out and the community centre and then I would go snorkeling. At lunch time everyone gathered at the community centre where the people who worked there had prepared us some lunch. I had about 4 sausage rolls with sauce and a couple glasses of water. once lunch had finished we all go a bowl of ice cream and then we went out and went snorkeling. During the snorkeling we saw a couple of stingrays and some crabs but that was about it. Once we got back we had free time and I helped out by cleaning the wet suits and gear from the snorkeling. after free time wee had chill out time which is where we got to a specific place with our number on it ( I'm number 7) with a roll mat and read a book for about and hour. after we had sat there for an hour we went back to our wardlis and prepared dinner. tonight we had a barbecue which consisted of some sausages on bread with sauce and some mash potatoes. after dinner we cleaned up and then we headed over to the classroom where we started to wright our blogs which is what I'm doing now. I have to finish now so good bye and that was my day on Monday 16 march 2009.

Tuesday 17 march 2009

today when we woke up we went for a 5.5 km run and I had improved my time by all most 15 minutes faster than my previous time. after the run we had to do some push ups and some sit ups and then we went and had breakfast. after breakfast we all met at the classroom and got told what we were going to do today. Wardlis 2 and 3 were going to help out with some mentally disabled people while wardlis 4 and 5 went on a history tour. during the history tour I learnt about trees, a ghost town and some ship wreaks. If you want to know more look at my blog about history tour 1. after the history tour we came back and had free time and then chill out time. after that we went back to our wardlis and had dinner. tonight dinner was curry and rice. It was really nice. after dinner we went to the classroom and then we went to bed. unfortunately I am sleeping out tonight and now I have to go. bye.

Wednesday 18 march 2009

last night I was sleeping out and it was cool. I saw a rabbit. This morning when I woke up I got changed and then went down to the shed to get ready for power training. It involved doing a 1 km run along a sand track and then doing some sprints up and back around 10 times on the beach. the second set of sprints involved doing push ups. after the sprints were over a small group of people wand I were let off earlier than everyone else and jogged back to camp for breakfast. after breakfast we all met up at the classroom and then we went off with our groups for today's activities. The first half of the day involved reef watch and snorkeling and then the second half of the day was 2 hours of blog writing which is what I am doing now.

Thursday 19 march 2009

today we did a 9.2 km run but if you weren't that good at running you could do a 6 km run along the sand and I did the latter. after the run (I didn't time myself) I headed of for breakfast and then off to the classroom. After I left the classroom we all got an early free time because the schedule had changed for the day. after free time we had lunch and then we went shopping again and I almost missed the bus. When we went shopping my wardli spent $73 and the last time we went shopping my wardli spent $414. After shopping we went to pick up the extra bread and milk that had been ordered because lots of people were running very low. Once we got back we had some more free time and then we had chill out time which is where you read a book for an our. After chill out time we had dinner which was pork chops and home made potato chips on the BBQ, it was delicious.after dinner we all met up at the classroom as usual and then we started writing our blogs which is what I'm doing now.

Sunday 22 march 2009

I haven't done a journal entry in a few days and that is because I have not had the chance and time to do so. Today we went for a 3.4 km run and I improved heaps since my last 3.4 km run and I am very proud of myself for doing so. After the run we had to do 100 push ups and 100 sit ups and I did 80 of each and I am proud of that too. After that we went to the classroom and worked on our blogs all day. After dinner we came back to the classroom and watched a movie called 'crime spree' and it was really cool.

Tuesday 24 March 2009

I missed out yesterdays journal entry and I am sorry that you didn't find out what I did on Monday. This morning we did a power training and it was the same thing as last time and then we jogged back in small groups like last time. after the training we had breakfast which was cornflakes again. After breakfast we went to the classroom and then my wardli went and built a wall outside Dales' house. after the wall building we had lunch and then we went sea kayaking and it was really cool. then we had dinner which was schnitzel and then we came to the classroom to do our blogs.

Wednesday 25 March 2009

today we wnet for a 3.4 km run and I didnt improve my time but it went allright. after the run we did some stretches and somepush ups. after we did that we had breakfast and then we went to do some pine removal. after lunch when we got back we did some cooking with Moff and we made some toffe and some bread rolls. after that we had dinner which was chicken curry and then we came to the classroom to write our blogs which is what I'm doing now.

novel

The novel that I have read was 'The Escape' in the 'Henderson's Boys' series by Robert Muchamore and I have finished reading it. The reason that I was reading this book was because my mum sent it to me and it was a very interesting read.

The story takes place in the summer of 1940 and Hitler's army is advancing towards France.
Main Characters
  • Charles Henderson
  • Marc Kligour (12)
  • Rosie Clarke (13)
  • Paul Clarke (11)

The influences of the main characters was that there was a war on and that the Nazis were advancing through France. Marc is trying to get to Beauvais and gets caught up in everything when he hides in Henderson's house and gets found by the Gestapo (Hitlers secret police). Marc is found by the gestapo in Henderson's house and has his tooth pulled out and passes out and then wakes to find Henderson there. Henderson then helps Marc and they become good friends. Paul and Rosie are trying to find Henderson by travelling trough France to get some important blueprints for a radio to Henderson. When their father dies they are left alone and they then got to a church and get reunited with a small boy called Hug aged four. They then travel to Tours and stay with a small family. They get a message from Henderson saying that a German officer pretending to be him will be coming and they should be prepared. They shoot the officer but Hugo gets shot by the officer just before he dies and then Hugo dies as well. After Hugo dies they meet Henderson and then plan to go to Britain.

I think that this book should be made into a film but the part of the plot that I think should be removed is the part where they meet Hugo because it is very sad when Hugo dies.

fitness program

Our fitness program is basically waking up at 7:00 am and then doing either a 3.4 km run, a 5.5 km run, a 9.2 km run or a 11 km run. We also do some power training or play a game.

The first run which was on Saturday 14 March 2009 was a 3.4 km run and we had to run from the shed on camp to the steps that lead on to the road which then went on to the jetty and then from the steps we ran back. On this first run we had to jog that distance on o footpath and it started at 7:00 am on the dot and when it turned 7:00 we would all run off down the path. These runs are hard and as well as it being very early it was also cold and you were tired. On the first run I got a time of something because I cant access my time at the moment. After the runs we would list our times and then head off for breakfast.

On Sunday 15 March 2009 we did a 5.5 km run which went along the same path as the 3.4 km run but when you got to the stairs you kept going on to the jetty that was further up the road and then you would run back. This run was harder because it was longer and there was a big hill that you had to run up on the way there and on the way back. Once you got back to the stairs you ran the same way back to the shed then you would record your time and head off for breakfast. On this 5.5 km run I got a time of 45.40 minutes and that meant that I came almost last.

On Monday 16 March 2009 instead of doing a run we played a modified game of soccer. the rules were basically the same only to score points every single player of both teams had to be in the forward half. So if you scored a goal and 2 of the oppositions players weren't in the forward half you would get two points. And if you scored another goal and 2 of your players weren't in the forward half the other team would get 2 points. We played this game for the same time that we did the runs which were around 45 minutes. Once the game had finished we went off for breakfast.

On Tuesday 17 March 2009 we did another 5.5 km run which was the same as the other 5.5 km run. the only thing that had changed was the times of people. most people had improve while some had stayed the same and I think that one person got slower than their previous time. I had improved on my time by almost 15 minutes and I am very proud of that. Mr Mkinnon had also gotten here and did the run with us. He didn't look tired at all and was making faces at people. After everyone had finished instead of heading off for breakfast we all got a roll mat and did push ups and sit ups. My final time was 31.30 minutes. After the push ups and sit ups we then headed off for breakfast.

On Wednesday 18 March 2009 we didn't do a run instead we did power training. Power training involves doing a 1 km run down a sand track down to Flaherty's beach and doing sprints on the sand. The first set of sprints were running back and forth over a 10 m distance and touching a line as you turned. This was very tiring and you did them in fours so there would be 4 people running back and forth on the sand. The second set of sprints were over a 5 m distance and at one end when you touched the line you had to get down and to 10 push ups on the sand but this only happened on one line. After the second set a small group of about 6 or 7 people were allowed to go back early. I was part of that group and we had to jog all the way back along the sand track to the shed and only then could we have breakfast. Dale said that we had to jog back as a group which meant that we had to stay together and no running off.

snorkelling

date: Monday 16 march 2009

today wardlis' 4 and 5 went snorkeling and it was really cool. there were many things to see and before we even got into the water there was a sting ray right at the place where we were getting into the water and it was really cool. Before we went snorkeling we went out and cleared out some weeds from the surrounding area and we also made a path that was some kind of shortcut that meant that you didn't have to walk around the corner of the road.

history tour 2

On this history tour we went to a local museum in Warooka that had been converted from an old troopers station and it was really cool. I got to hold and pretend to fire a real shotgun from the ????'s and there was also a and it was really cool because I got to draw it from its sheath and have a look at it. There was also an old wind-up phone that generated its own electricity. When you held the wires in each hand and got some one to wind it up electricity would go through you body because you completed the circuit. In another room of the building there was a kitchen and it was filled with all this old food packaging and stuff like that. There was even an old tin of weetbix and lots of tobacco (roll your own). There was also and old jail there (remember it was a troopers station) and Moff took pictures of people in the jail. There were some machines and there was even a tractor wth caterpillar tracks on it! After we left the museum we went to some old house and there was alot of this old machinery that was really valuable and there was a pig that lived there. There were also some ferals that lived there but they werent there when we went there or we just didnt see them.

community service-hardwicke bay

the community service involved pulling out plants and weeds that weren't native and that were killing other plants and animals.

scientific reaserch- reef watch

On the day we went reef watching we also did some snorkeling but that's not what I'm supposed to write about in this post. The reef watching was really cool we went down to a large bunch of rock pools and had a look around and recorded data. Some of the data was about the type of surface and how many moving animals that were in a certain area. It was really cool and I saw four starfish that were blue and only just bigger than your thumbnail. What you'd do is get a tape measure and go to different lengths of the tape and then get a grid and see how much of a certain material covered a certain amount of grid intersections. After that you'd see how many animals were in that grid area and record that down. You'd also get a depth peg and see how deep the surface was and if it was under water or above.

community service-leisure options

The community service-leisure options involved working with mentally disabled people and planting trees and just making friends with them. When we got there we all met up and got partnered up with a buddy and we would work with them planting seeds and working with them. After we had done some work we stopped for lunch and my lunch was a Vegemite sandwich and then we had some conversations with all the people there and got to know them better. after lunch we went back to work and started doing the same thing again which was planting seeds. after we had finished and went back we had some free time and then we did chill out time. after that we had dinner.

We met with the leisure options people on Friday and we

scientific reaserch- hooded plover

Hooded plover, by Will James.

Synopsis:
The hooded plover (Thinornis rubricollis) is a small bird about 10 cm tall and 20 cm long ands weigh90-100g and are endemic to South Australia. These birds live and nest on the beach and it is because of this situation that they are going extinct. The males and females have the same appearance while the juveniles are basically just grey versions of their parents. The birds live on the beach and also nest and feed on the beach. These birds are dying out because they are being killed by predators and are not adapting to their changing environment. Their nests are run over by cars and they do not produce rapidly enough to keep their numbers in the clear. Some ways of helping these little birds is by banning driving on certain beaches and by sealing off areas where they are nesting so that people don’t walk over them.

Aim and introduction:
What we are trying to do with this research is to save these birds from extinction and to help them come back from the brink. The habitats are being destroyed by humans driving their cars on the beaches and by dumping rubbish on the beach as well as predators eating them. These birds nest on the beach by scraping a small hole in the sand, this leaves the nest open to attack from predators and with them being on the beach cars and people can destroy the eggs by driving and playing beach games such as cricket.

Method:
When we did our research we walked along the beach and tried to see if there were any hooded plovers on the beach. If there were any plovers on the beach we would write down wether there were any threats to the plovers such as cars and people on the beach. We also recorded the weather conditions wind strength as well as he coordinates of the place where we found the birds. When we did our research we had five different jobs that were done. One person was the scribe and that person wrote down all the info that needed recording. The second person was the GPS operator and they told the scribe all the coordinates of the different sightings and nests that we saw. The third person was the threat observer and they told the scribe of all the threats to the plover that were around the nesting sights. A fourth person was the photographer and they took pictures of the plover and the environment that they were living in. And the fifth person was the video operator and they took videos of the bird walking around and of what their actions were.

Results:
The results that our group collected were of no surprise at all to me. I knew that there would be almost no hooded plovers at the two beaches that our group went to and there was in total only about 4-6 hooded plovers at both sites combined. The two beaches that our group went to were Pondalowie and West Beach. At both of theses site it was very cloudy and windy and the temperature was high at times. We didn’t see many things and we only saw a few hooded plovers and didn’t see any nest eggs chick or juveniles at both beaches and so there wasn’t much to write about.
Found
Other plovers: 30
Foot prints: many
Fox prints: 0
Horse prints: 0
Tourists: 19
Vehicles (various sizes):12
Pacific gulls: 4
Sea gulls: 25
Fishermen: 4

Discussion:
I think that what we have discovered will go towards helping he hooded plover survive. It may not have made a big difference but every little thing helps and I have done my part to help this little bird survive and continue to live. The major cause f the reduction in the numbers of the hooded plover is because there are to man y people driving along the beach in their big 4x4’s and crushing the birds nests and eggs. The birds also have very little chance of becoming adults. The eggs only have a 22-24% chance of becoming chicks. The chicks only have 20% chance of becoming juveniles and then the juveniles only have a 55% chance of becoming adults.

Conclusion:
I think that there are many things that people can do to help the hooded plover and that they just need to get organised and figure out some solutions that will help the plover to survive. I think that the people that will help with the projects that are trying to save the plover will the environmentalists and those other types of people. There are many threats to the hooded plover such us foxes, gulls, cars, people, lizards and feral cats and these threats must be contained if the plover is to survive. I think that they should seal off some beaches or just area of beaches during the mating and hatching season of the hooded plover so that the birds will have a bigger chance of surviving. They should also try to remove animals and predators or at least protect the birds so that they have a bigger chance of reproducing and continuing the cycle.

community service-aleppo pine removal

The Aleppo pine removal project is done by every one at the camp and has been done by PAC boys for around 2 years. What my group did was we removed some wire fences so that the people could access some big trees next to the side of the road so that they could chop them down and then burn them. Once we had removed the wire from the fence we had to roll it up into loops of wire and dump them into a trailer. While we were doing the fence we got to wear some high visibility clothing which was cool because I really like high visibility clothing because it looks cool. After we had done the fencing we went down the road and chopped down some smaller trees with saws and It was really cool. After that we went to the IGA at Warooka to pick up the bread and milk order and while we were there we got to buy 2 items for ourselves. I bought a bottle of Red Bull and a packet of M&Ms which were all yellow.

history tour 1

On the first history tour I saw lots of things and learnt heaps of stuff. The first thing that I learnt was that the Norfolk island pine which grow on beaches were planted as a supply of wood for ships masts. I also learnt some stuff about some other trees. After we got to the Inness national park we went to Stenhouse bay which was an old mining town. There they mined allot of different materials for buildings and many other things. After we had a look around the mining town we went to Inneston which is now a ghost town and there are also some buildings that you can rent out to stay in. It was very interesting looking at all the different buildings and structures in the town. One of the things that we saw was the original Bellco chalk factory which had survived but wasn't being used to make chalk anymore. After we had a good look at the town we went and had a look at the wreaks of the ships the Ferret and the Ethel. the Ethel had got beached and eventually rusted away and the Ferret got wreaked and fell apart. At the same beach there were also some pirate caves but because the tide was in and there was some really big surf we couldn't explore the caves. After we had a look at the wreaks we went back to camp.

sea kayaking

Tuesday the 24 march 2009 and today I went sea kayaking and it was really cool. The main difference with a normal kayak and a sea kayak is that a sea kayak has a rudder that you control with the foot pedals. Today after we had met at the classroom my wardli went to the shed and got our spray jackets and then we got on the bus and drive down to the boat ramp. After we had gotten our PFD's and our spray decks we got our paddles and got the kayaks into the water and then got into them. We paddled around a path that was set by the instructor (Phil) and then we went out onto the sea. It was really cool going over the waves and using the rudder because the rudder made steering the kayak so much easier. The wind was against us but that didn't matter, after we had paddled out a bit we turned around and came back and this time the wind and waves were on our side. After we got back we did some games like standing up in our kayaks and sitting on the backs and doing wheelies. Once we had finished we went back to the boat ramp and then we loaded up the kayaks onto the trailer and then we went back to camp.

On the second part of the sea kayaking trip we went back to the boat ramp and got in the same boats as last time but the only difference was that instead of Luke coming Mr Baird was coming with us. After we had all gotten onto the water we paddled around and had some fun. The water was really calm and peaceful and it was really clear. Some people had brought some hand reels and went fishing but they didn't catch anything. After we had paddled a bit we turned around and went into Magazine Bay and played some games. Phil the instructor taught us how to save ourselves if we were tipping over. And if we wanted to we could hold onto the front of his kayak and he would do an Eskimo roll and you would have to hold on. I did it and it was really cool. After we got back we had to load up the kayaks again because we were the last group again. Once we got back to camp we had to unload the kayaks and put them into the shed because they wouldn't be used for a while and we couldn't leave them out.

cycle tour

On the first day of the cycle tour we rode 40 km on dirt roads but before we went riding we had to get our bikes and helmets. The bike that I was riding was a red giant and Pete and Paul who were the bike people helped us all to find the bike that fitted you the best. Once we had all gotten a bike that fitted us we rode out of the gates and down the road. Once we had ridden out the gates we road around somewhere that I couldn't remember and down some dirt roads. After the first day I think we had ridden around 30 to 40 kilometres in one day.

On the second day we loaded the bikes into the trailers and drove out to the Inness national park and road there. We road around 50 kilometres but I was much harder that the first day because there were lots of hills and there was one really steep hill that was called challenge mountain that was really had to ride up. Once we had all gotten up to the top of the hill we got to ride down the hill which was really fun and cool. At the bottom of the hill we saw some emus. We then loaded all the bikes back onto the bus and went back to camp.

On the third and final day we were all in high spirits because we knew that we wouldn't have to ride the bikes anymore and that we would get to move into our wardlis on the following day. This day was easier than the second day but around the same as the first day. most of the third day was riding on dirt roads but it was all right. Once we had finished we all crashed out and I felt really happy that we didn't have to ride anymore.

parent weekend

On the parent weekend my mum, dad and little brother came to spend the weekend with me. When my parents got here they helped me load up my stuff into the car and then we drove to the Marion Bay Holiday Villas and we were staying in number eight. When we got there we unloaded the car and brought everything inside. Once we had taken everything inside we went out and had dinner at the restaurant that was near where we were staying and I had fish and chips. While we were at the restaurant I saw Stuart, Karl, Hugo, Adam, Henry Luxton, Henry Rasheed, Henry Jamman and Sean. After dinner we went back to the villa and watched some T.V. and then we went to bed. In the morning we had bacon and eggs on toast for breakfast and I had two eggs and two rashers of bacon with two pieces of toast. After breakfast we went out to Innes National Park and had a look around. The first place that we went too was a light house that I cant remember the name of and then we went to the wreak of the Ethel and Ferret. After we had a look at the ship wreaks we went to Dolphin Bay and went for a swim. While we were there I saw Jack, Chris, Albie, Nick and Matt. After we left the beach we went to the Rhino's Cafe for lunch and I had fish and chips again. After lunch we went back to the villa and I played cards and Monopoly with Lachlan ( my little brother) until we went and had dinner which was at the same restaurant as last night. For dinner I had a hawiian pizza. After dinner we came back and watched Happy Feet the movie that was on T.V. and then we went to bed. For breakfast the next day we had croissants. We then packed up everything because we were leaving and then we went out again and had a look around the place. We didn't go to Innes but we stayed around the town. For lunch we stopped at a park and had sand witches. After lunch we went to Hardwicke Bay for the rest of the day. While we were at Hardwicke Bay I had a walk around and saw lots of little crabs and there were these people who came down to the beach as well and they had a two dogs which were a German Sheppard and a Red Setter and they were running around every where. After we left the beach we went back into town and I had an early dinner at Hungry Mack's and I had fish and chips. After my dinner we drove to the camp and dropped me off and then my parents and brother drove back to Adelaide.

surfing

On the first day of surfing the instructors came and we got fitted with our wetsuits that we would keep for the time we were surfing before we drove to Berri Bay south and surfed there. When we went surfing there were two people who weren't surfing and one of them had and injury and the other got in trouble and he wasn't allowed to surf for that day. On the first day it was really cool and we first had to get into a position when we caught the wave and had to steer the board. After we had done that we got to try and stand up and it was really cool. I stood up heaps of times and it was really fun and exciting. On this day we surfed until lunch time and then we drove back to camp for lunch and then did the afternoon activity.

On the second day we drove to Baby Lizards beach and had to carry our boards down across some cliff tops and then we got to the beach. Once we got to the beach we were able to surf and on this day we were surfing for the whole day so we had to bring our own lunch. We surfed until it was time for lunch and then we all got out of the water and went into the shade of the cliffs above us and had lunch. For lunch I had some peanuts and everyone wanted some. After lunch we got back into the water and surfed for the rest of the day. When we had to stop we carried our boards back up the cliffs and put them onto the trailer.

On the third and final day of surfing we drove to Berri Bay north and surfed there. Everyone carried down their boards except for me because I hurt my leg and I was going to do body surfing. It was really fun diving into the waves and swimming on them and over the waves. After we had finished surfing we drove back and cleaned the wetsuits and said goodbye to the instructors.
